Chapter Sixteen
On Monday morning I stalk the halls before first period, hoping to find Kate before chem. Since she’s grounded, her mom dropped her off and will pick her up after school. And after Garrett failed to pick me up this morning, I came to the conclusion that carpool is officially over until further notice. Kate finally makes it to her locker, and even though I greet her with a hey and a smile, she extracts her physics book from the bottom of the pile, slams her locker shut, and brushes by me as if I’m a ghost.
Her long stride is an even match for me so I easily keep up. “Hey, why are you ignoring me? You’re the one that screwed up.”
“How could you do that to me, Abbey?”
“What are you talking about? You should be thanking me. I saved you from making a total ass of yourself.” She doesn’t respond and is now walking quickly in the opposite direction of my class, but I feel like I have to explain. “Kate—”.
“Saved me?” She takes a quick left down the stairs. “I’m grounded for life, and my mom took away my cell phone. My life is over thanks to you.”
I grab the sleeve of her sweater so she’ll slow down and listen. She finally stops for a second at the bottom of the stairs. “Do you have any idea how drunk you were? And how half-naked you were?” I whisper. “Who knows where you would have ended up.”
She glares at me then takes off again. I follow, but then she stops suddenly, making me put my brakes on, too. A freshman who was tailing me too closely slams into me. I glare at her even though she apologizes quickly.
“That’s the point of being drunk. Thanks a lot for ruining everything. Oh, and by the way, Miguel text-dumped me, so there you go. You got what you wanted.”
“What I wanted?” Is she for real? “Kate, listen—” But I don’t know why I’m defending myself, so I stop talking. She storms off, leaving me alone with unnecessary guilt and shock. The first bell rings over my head, and I bolt to class. For the first time all year, I’m looking forward to getting my brain scrambled by equations I don’t understand. It’s got to be better than thinking about Kate, or Devin, or Garrett, or any of this BS.
There’s an air of relaxation in the room, so I look around suspiciously. That’s when I see the sub at the front. “Oh, glorious day, Mrs. Dumb is absent,” I say to Jake as I take my seat.
“Yep, better protect your eyes. Things might get out of control in here.”
I laugh, then focus my attention on what the sub is saying about our group projects. “So that means you’re to work on your projects the entire period.” I would’ve preferred a movie, but at least maybe I’ll be distracted by Jake’s funny comments and drawings.
Jake, Daphne, Eric, and I choose to convene at a lab table in the front of the room.
